SC businesses asked to enroll in credit monitoring

Friday, Nov. 2, 2012

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Businesses filing South Carolina tax returns since 1998 are invited to sign up for a credit monitoring service.

Gov. Nikki Haley says Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp. offered its CreditAlert service for free to both businesses and the state after learning about the security breach at South Carolina's revenue agency. State officials say an international computer hacker accessed data from about 3.6 million individual tax returns and up to 657,000 businesses.

Beginning Friday, business owners can visit www.dandb.com/sc, or call 800-279-9881 to sign up. Those who do will receive an alert to any changes in their business credit file, including changes in address or management names.

Businesses can also sign up at no cost for a self-monitoring service offered by Experian. Signing up through www.smartbusinessreports.com/SouthCarolina became available Thursday.
