AIKEN COUNTY S.C (WRDW)--For the past 26 years, South Carolina House of Representatives District 84 has known one name; Roland Smith. But Smith has decided that after decades of public service he’s going to retire. This is leaving the door wide open for a number of candidates.
Five candidates have qualified for the election to replace Smith: Adam Mestres, Chris Corley, Rick Turnbull, S. Lance Weaver and Susan Swanson (she has since dropped out from the election but her name will remain on the ballot).
“We're moving strong on this. It's one day before the polls open, less than 24 hours,” said Mestres.
“We have really tightened up,” said Turnbull,” I think its going to be a horse race. It’ll be something for people to really get out and vote on and that's what I'd like to see.”
“We’re glad that this [the campaign] has finally come to an end,” added Corley.
The 19 polling locations across the district open at 7 AM Tuesday morning.
