RICHMOND CTY, Ga. -- News 12 has learned Richmond County Board of Education's Richard Roundtree has announced the start of his campaign for sheriff.

Roundtree works as a lieutenant for the Board of Education Public Safety.

In a Facebook status, Roundtree said the following:
"With much prayer and overwhelming community support, it is with great pride that I begin my 2012 campaign to become the next sheriff of Augusta-Richmond County. The journey has been long and God knows it has not always been easy. I by no means am a perfect man, but I know that I have become a better man. I only ask for your prayers and your support as we make this historic run together.

Attached to his status is a red and gold flyer with a list of more than 19 years of work experience.

In it, Roundtree claims "one team, one dream 2012."

Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength has not announced his plans as of yet.

We spoke to Sheriff Strength just after the announcement, he had no comment.

He told us he will have an announcement on his plans no later than February.
