Richmond BOE elects new president

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- In a historic move, the Richmond County Board of Education elected its first female president and vice president ever.

The newly-elected vice president received every vote present, while Madame President Venus Cain received one vote against her.

Cain received eight of the 10 votes.

Pasty Scott didn't want to speak on camera, but when asked her why she didn't vote for Cain, she said, "I voted my convictions and beliefs."

Scott is the widow of former board member Joe Scott. Cain and Mr. Scott exchanged words back in 2007. That's when when the board was interviewing candidates for superintendent. The dispute ended in the court.

Even though there maybe some hard feelings, many on the board, including the superintendent, believe the two members will be able to work together.

"She's going to give 100 percent to supporting Mrs.Cain. I know that. I know that will happen," said Superintendent Dr. Frank Roberson.

"It'll be fine. Whatever reservations, we'll certainly work on that," said Helen Minchew.

Cain says she has no issue with Mrs.Scott's vote.

"It's fine. I don't have a problem with that," Cain said.

When asked, "Are you still going to be able to work together?"

"Oh yes, yes," Cain replied.

The newly-elected officers got right to work after the meeting, discussing in private what their next move will be.

The two BOE officers will forever be locked in history but both agree they are ready and eager to get to work.

"Definitely going to put the interest of our students first," Minchew said.

"I'm about the business of moving the district forward and continuing what we're doing," Cain said.

Venus Cain is the first black female BOE president since Justine Washinton, who served in 1993. Minchew will serve as her vice president after serving on the board for 12 years.
