On Your Side: Rabid animal attacks in Aiken County prompt clinics

Saturday, March 29th, 2014

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- A local veterinarian said rabies is a prevalent disease in Aiken County.

Cindy Brown makes her rounds vaccinating Aiken County pets. Brown said the disease is in Aiken, and just one shot could save you and your pet.

"In Aiken County alone not three or four weeks ago we had an inicidence of a rabid cat biting two humans and getting in a fight with other cats and dogs. Now we have humans going under rabies treatment," said Brown.

And cases seem to be on the rise.

"We had a positive fox outside an elementary school in Wagner last weekend," said Brown.

Just this past Wednesday on Limerick Drive in Aiken. One man was attacked by a rabid raccoon. Deputies say it came into his home and attacked his face. Now, he will have to undergo medical treatment
Cathy Twitty lives on the same street and says it's a concern when she cares for her grandson.

"Don't go near it, if it comes after you; you run," Twitty said.

I don't let him go outside by himself anyway but it's shocking. I'll be a lot more vigilant," Twitty said.

About 275 South Carolinians get preventative treatment for rabies every year.

"That's scary because most of us live in neighborhoods that have woods so a rabid animal could come into our neighborhood very easily," Susan Minoflo said.

Wild animals usually carry the disease but pets can easily get it as well. That's why its a state law to have your pet vaccinated.

"It's for their protection but it's for other peoples protection too from other animals," Minoflo said.

If you missed getting your pet a shot today, here are the upcoming rabies clinics for a small fee.
