AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has arrested the father accused of leaving his child in a car outside of an Augusta apartment complex.

Russell Givens was booked into the Richmond County Jail on Thursday. Givens is accused of leaving his 19-month-old child in that car this weekend. Givens is charged with deprivation of a minor.

According to this incident report, the father admits to leaving the little boy alone in the car for several minutes.

On Saturday just after 5 p.m., fire and EMS were called the Woodcrest Apartments for a child locked in a hot car. Richmond county deputies were also called minutes later.

When deputies got to that scene, they found the 19-month-old sitting in his father's lap. EMTs told deputies the child was put in the back of an ambulance to cool down.

They say the child was hot and sweaty but otherwise healthy. Emergency crews tell deputies Givens was not letting them take the child's vital signs.

That report also details how the good Samaritan, Nick Ortalaza, and his wife called 911 and pushed the window of the car down to get the child out.

In this report, deputies say they called Division of Family and Children Services to investigate the incident and make sure the child was okay at home.

The sheriff's office said even though the child is okay, they are charging Givens with deprivation of a minor because the little boy was alone for several minutes.

The temperature at the time of the incident was 92 degrees with a heat index of 94, the report said.
