AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- It happened under the cover of darkness, but it's a crime seared in the victim's memory for the rest of her life.

Sunday night as she walked from her car to her door, a woman was attacked from behind, held at knife point, and forced to perform sexual acts.

"Makes me feel very uncomfortable and really unsafe," said tenant Charlene Gainey.

Gainey was just getting home from work when she noticed a piece of paper stuck on her front door. It was a message from Madison on the Green warning them about the assault.

"I can't even imagine. I know that had to be horrific," Gainey said.

The letter says the complex is requesting more police presence on the property. Something Gainey says the complex needs.

"I've seen a police car. They usually have one parked around the corner, but I've never actually seen the police ever," she said.

As word spreads through the complex, with the suspect still on the loose, neighbors wonder how safe they really are.

"I don't feel comfortable knowing something like that happened out here," Gainey admits.

"I love my family, and I would hate anything to happen to them," said Jerry Reid.

Reid also lives at Madison on the Green and has a fiance and two little ones to protect.

"I don't let her go outside by herself. I don't let the kids go outside by themselves. Always under supervision, and I never let her walk alone," Reid said.

While the victim was able to break away from her attacker to call 9-1-1, Gainey says she's ready to break her lease before something else happens.

"It just really makes me nervous and really want to hurry up and look at some other options of moving out of the area," she said.

Right now deputies only have a vague description of the suspect. He's a 6 foot, 170 pound black male. He also has shoulder length dreads. He was wearing red gym shorts and a white t-shirt at the time.

If you saw anything last night, Richmond County investigators want to know.
