Protests begin over 'New U' name aon ASU's first day of classes

Monday, Aug. 20, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A protest is ongoing over the name of Georgia Regents University.

As of noon on Monday, 200 to 300 people were gathered at Augusta State University's campus.

Students, alumni and members of the community are upset with the way the name was chosen for the consolidated ASU and Georgia Health Sciences University. Some say they wish Augusta could have been in the name.

Austin Rhodes, a radio host at WGAC, spearheaded the protest.

"This process was corrupted. There was no process. This was a dictatorial edict," Rhodes said. "That's not the way this was supposed to work. This is our school, this is our community, and we want the name Augusta reflected in that."

School leaders, including President Dr. Ricardo Azziz, are saying the decision is final.
