Proposed gun laws are worrisome for some

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- President Obama is about to pull the trigger on some new gun laws, but many people want to shoot them down. The original Augusta Gun and Knife show is in town this weekend, people started lining up before the doors even opened.

Larry Steverson organized this weekend's events and says President Obama is the world's best gun salesman right now.

"He's absolutely better than Bill Clinton and he was a great one," Steverson said.

After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in December, President Obama and Vice President Biden presented new laws they want Congress to pass to help curb gun violence. The plan includes required criminal background checks for all guns sales, banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity gun magazines, giving law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime and increasing access to mental health services.

Most of the guns enthusiasts don't want these laws passed. However, 18-year-old Treybon Stupperd is one gun owner that agrees with the president.

Stupperd says the laws President Obama is trying to pass are needed, especially the law banning military-style assault weapons.

"There's no need for something that powerful. That's something that should be in the military because they are going to war," Stupperd said.

Steverson says while business might be good right now, the president should focus on the bad guys and not the good people trying to protect their families.

"Criminals aren't out here buying the guns. The nut cases that are out here doing these mass shootings and everything, they aren't buying them, they are stealing them," Steverson said.
