Pro-Republican group enters ad war in Barrow race

Friday, Oct. 26, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- An independent, pro-Republican political committee says it's spending about $200,000 on advertising in eastern Georgia, where the GOP is trying to oust Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow of Augusta.

A super PAC called the Congressional Leadership Fund, led by former Republican members of Congress, said Thursday it has bought ad time in the Augusta and Savannah markets leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Barrow is the Deep South's last white congressman and is fighting for re-election against Republican state Rep. Lee Anderson of Grovetown. As of Sept. 30, Barrow reported having $1.19 million left in the bank left to defend in the campaign's final weeks, compared to $174,297 for Anderson.

But outside groups are also spending heavily on attack ads in the race, having already invested $3.14 million.
