RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a 12-year-old girl who is the subject of an Amber Alert may be heading to Florida.

Carteret County deputies think Abigale Faith Lefevers is with a registered sex offender, 38-year-old Timothy Newman. Investigators say she had been communicating with Newman in recent weeks. The girl has not been seen since Monday.

Deputies said Wednesday afternoon that the latest information they have indicates that Newman may be heading from South Carolina to Florida.

The state of Georgia has also issued an alert for Newman and the girl.

Investigators say Newman is familiar with the Atlantic coast because his father was a large boat captain and may be hanging around marinas.

Newman may also be driving a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring with a North Carolina license tag AKT6534.
