BURKE COUNTY, Ga.--Five people are recovering from gunshot wounds after a party in Burke County takes a violent turn. It happened in the small town of Gough just outside of Waynesboro Sunday morning.
Nearly 200 people were at a party in the Jones and Anderson Auto Service building at the corner of Highway 80 and Gough Spur Rd. Investigators say around 1:30 in the morning, shots rang out, and people ran for their lives.
Michael Kirkland lives behind the building where the party took place. He says, "It [gunfire] would start and stop and start back again stop and went on for like 45 minutes. I was like, 'Great day!' It was like 100 or so shots."
Kirkland watched as dozens of people took off running through the field behind his house. He says, "I thought a good 15-20 people would've gotten injured, Thank God it was only 5."
His family lives in the area. They gathered outside to help as teenagers ran to their house for cover.
"My cousin was on the front porch when a bullet went by, you know, it starts whistling. He heard bullets actually come down this way," he said.
GBI agents are in the early stages of their investigation, and they're looking into the possibility of gang involvement.
Friends threw the party in memory of a Burke County football player, known by his friends as 'Snake.' He died in a car crash a couple of years ago. The proceeds from the party were for a memorial scholarship fund.
Kirkland played football with 'Snake,' and knew most of the people at the party.
He says, "As a matter of fact, I was about to go to the party, but I fell asleep and overslept, so I just fell asleep and didn't make it. So I'm glad I wasn't there," he said.
Two 17 year olds, an 18 year old, a 19 year old, and a 21 year old are all recovering from gun shot wounds. One victim is still listed in critical condition .
"It's just a wake up call for everybody. It's getting real out here. You can't be safe out here anymore," Kirkland said.
GBI investigators confirm they're looking for more than one suspect, but those are the only details they'll release at this time. Stay tuned to News 12 for updates.
