Shooting puts local schools on lockdown until classes released Monday

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An on-campus shooting at Paine College put the school, GRU and other local schools on lockdown on Monday.

More than half a dozen richmond county schools were on a soft lockdown.

As of 5 p.m., Paine College was on lockdown. The 57-acre private school campus holds just over 800 students.

The public was asked to stay away from the 1200 block of 15th Street Monday afternoon.

Per Richmond County Director of School Safety, the following schools were on soft lockdown in Richmond County:

  • The Alternative Education Center
  • Laney High School
  • Academy of Richmond County (ARC)
  • Lamar-Milledge Elementary
  • T.W. Josey High School
  • Aquinas High School
  • Curtis Baptist School (heightened alert)

Richmond County schools will be let out at their regularly scheduled times, Richmond County Director of School Safety Alfonzo Williams said. Extra officers and supervisors will be patrolling school areas as school lets out Monday afternoon.

Easter Seals and Shepeard Community Blood Center confirm its offices are also on lockdown as of 3 p.m. on Monday.
