AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A 5 mile stretch of I-20 is bringing big business and if you like to shop, get ready.
Miles of the interstate can be pretty bare but one stretch of the highway is seeing a lot of growth and it's all thanks to location, location, location.
Walter Sprouse said the location of the new 800,000-square foot outlet mall will pull I-20 drivers from far and near.
"I come over here a lot. In fact, I live in North Augusta, but this is where I come to grocery shop and do some other shopping in this general area," Stephanie Morgan said.
She said developments in the area keep her coming not just because it's easy to get to, but because she really has no similar options.
Gander Mountain is hoping to open its doors this fall and Sprouse said all these new developments help bring more business and new customers.
Meanwhile Morgan said all the new shops will be worth her one possible inconvenience.
"I think I'm going to have a hard time finding a parking spot," she said.
The outlet mall will bring 300 jobs during construction and 1,500 when all the stores move in. They expect to open by Masters week 2016.
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The groundbreaking of the Outlet Mall of Georgia at Augusta is scheduled for December, Ben Carter Enterprises said.
The Outlet Mall of Georgia at Augusta will be an 800,000-square-foot fashion outlet mall with shops, restaurants, hotels and other retail uses. The 70 acres at I-20 and Riverwatch Parkway will top 1 million square feet once combined with the existing Costco and Cabela's locations and the Riverwatch Cinemas.
"We are attracted to Augusta and the regional trade area because it's home to nearly 2 million people, and its location has the ability to draw visitors and shoppers from Columbia, South Carolina, to the east and Greene County, Lake Oconee and The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation to the west," said Ben Carter, founder of Ben Carter Enterprises in a release. "The area is home to scores of single-family homes along the lake and golf courses and equestrian-related developments."
The groundbreaking announcement comes after an agreement to modify the new theatre's location. The new theatre will feature digital projection with stereo sound, spacious seating and a full-service restaurant, the release said. It will also offer a large format presentation auditorium with an 80-foot-wide four-story screen, seating about 300 people.
The Outlet Mall of Georgia at Augusta is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2016.
"We have 25 percent of the retail spaces in Phase I of the outlet mall under Letter of Intent and are working to convert those to leases," said Quito Anderson, CEO of Ben Carter Enterprises. "Our business plans call for us to have 60 percent of the space in the outlet mall leased when we break ground."
