AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta could be on the way to becoming a retail destination according to city leaders.

Earlier this afternoon, an Atlanta developer announced the opening of a fashion outlet mall right here in Augusta.

The mall will be located on I-20 and Riverwatch Parkway right across from Cabela's.

Leaders are on an emotional high. It's all about the announcement of the opening for the Premier Outlets of Augusta.

"This will be a destination center," Economic Development Chairman Henry Ingram said.

"This is great news," Commissioner Mary Davis said.

"This means jobs and tax revenue," Commissioner Corey Johnson said.

The 400,000 square foot outlet mall will go right across from Cabela's on River-watch parkway. Developer Ben Carter expects to start construction this November and plans on opening in 2016 around Masters Week.

This project is expected to bring 1,500 jobs to the area and millions in sales tax.

"I tell you it's been a long time in the works. We have been working with Ben Carter Enterprises, but the day is finally here," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver.

The Ashworth's live nearby and believe the outlet mall will raise their home's value.

"Now it's finally booming. When you open up something like this, it opens up everything else," neighbor Richard Ashworth said.

The developer said no stores are signed on just yet, but he's hoping to attract the same big chains in his other outlet mall in Savannah.

"We'd like to have Banana Republic and Gap. We'd like to have Polo if we can. We'd like to have J. Crew and Brooks Brothers," said Developer Ben Carter.

He said the prices will be reasonable which will draw in more people and money.
