AUGUSTA, Ga. -- You might have noticed the recent improvements at two Augusta airports. The work is done, but local contractors are saying show us the money!
Local airports seem to be flying high. A $5 million remodel just wrapped up at the private jet terminal at Augusta Regional Airport. Daniel Field also recently completed a major renovation ... but there is one problem.
"We've done our work. We had a contract," said Chris Kirkland of Kirkland Steel Fabricators. "They need to honor the contract and finish paying us."
Kirkland says his company finished the steel work at Daniel Field back in October. He says he is still owed money.
"Get us paid," Kirkland said.
We went straight to Daniel Field management.
"We feel their pain," said Manager Becky Shealy. "But there is really nothing we can do just because of the way that the contract is written."
Shealy notes the contract is between Kirkland Steel Fabricators and Pinnacle USA. We left a message with company leaders, but they failed to return our call. Shealy says Pinnacle has outstanding paperwork with Daniel Field that is holding up their final payment of more than $30,000.
"The subcontractors are the odd man out?" we asked.
"Unfortunately," Shealy said, "that's the way it appears. Yes."
It is the same story with different players at Augusta Regional. The new pilots' lounge comes complete with recliners and a full-service bathroom. It appears to be top-notch work.
"We're pleased with it," said Director Gary LeTellier. "We're proud of it."
Subcontractors are still waiting to be paid.
"And, of course, we withhold funds on contractors to make sure they do pay their subs," LeTellier said. "One way or the other, it will be resolved."
Meanwhile, the grand opening is this week. Kirkland says he speaks for all local business owners in voicing a level disgust.
"It's a little insulting for them to be having a grand opening and showing off this nice new building that they don't seem to be able to pay for," Kirkland said.
The groundbreaking for the new Augusta Regional terminal is on Wednesday.
