AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta Commission candidate who wants your vote in may is behind in his 2013 property taxes.

The 12 On Your Side Team looked at tax records for all those on the May ballot and Cleveland Garrison was the only one behind.

Right now -- the Richmond County Tax commissioners office is showing Garrison owes almost $7,000.

Garrison thinks he owes a lot less. Garrison is a district two commission candidate, business owner and pastor of Kingdom Full Gospel Church. He's also behind in his property taxes.

"It's been taking care of and when was that taking care of? It's not been paid yet but we are taking care of that," said Candidate Cleveland Garrison.

Richmond County Tax Commissioner's office tells News 12 Garrison owes the county more than $1,000 for property taxes on his Old Savannah Road Business. Documents also show that he owes more than $6,000 for his church and the parking lot on Norfolk Street.

In February, the county put a lien on all three properties.

We showed the bills to his opponent for the district two seat Dennis Williams. Williams says owing the county taxes and running for office don't mix.

"If I knew that I was back in my taxes, I wouldn't open myself up for office," said Williams.

Garrison says it's all a big misunderstanding. "When we purchased the church back or repossessed the church instead of putting it in the proper name, they put it in my name," said Garrison.

The tax commissioners office said once the name is changed the church will be exempt from paying taxes for 2014, but someone still has to pay up for 2013.
