Only on 12: Aiken Co. neighborhood safe after shootout

CLEARWATER, S.C. (WRDW) -- There's just one image burned into Katie Robertson's head. Imagine what it's like to stare down the barrel of a loaded shotgun with a 3-year-old child in your arms.

"I was going to die. I was going to die with my baby in my hand," Robertson said.

Last night, just before 6 p.m., that's what happened to Robertson.

"Next thing I heard was a shot," she said. "I went down and heard another shot and didn't get up."

She said a deputy told her she should have died, but miraculously, she and her baby weren't hit.

An Aiken County Sheriff's Office report says four armed men, some of them in black masks, shot up a mobile home park on Carn Park Drive, which is right off Cherokee Drive, in Clearwater. Two were on foot, witnesses say. The other two were in a white car.

"My brother walked over and asked me if I knew the white car. I told him no," Robertson said. "He said that two boys got out with masks on their faces, so my first thing to do was to get the kids in the house."

However, it was too late. She says the white car drove between the two of them.

Robertson says the confrontation started when her brother caught two of the men breaking into a nearby home. She says the suspects' covers were blown, and they came locked and loaded for revenge. She says it's dangerous in a neighborhood where almost 15 kids were outside at the time, including her own.

"Small kids under the age of 10," she said. "That's the sad thing about it."

An investigator was back today taking pictures and collecting statements, too. The Sheriff's Office says the four individuals, if they're caught, will be charged with attempted murder.

"They need to go down. Period. And I won't stop until something happens, because my baby is just totally a mess. He's a big mess," Robertson said.

The neighbors unfortunately weren't able to get a good description of the suspects. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office was able to locate one shell casing Monday night.

Again, miraculously, there were no injuries.
