AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW)- "I saw two ambulances drive away from the scene," Frank Johnson said.
Richmond County deputies were responding to a call about a suspicious person flagging down vehicles on Gordon Highway.
Before they even got on scene they learned two male pedestrians were hit, and those victims were teenagers.
"When I was leaving the neighborhood I saw a lot of police officers on Gordon Highway, by the bridge, on top of the bridge," said Johnson.
Frank Johnson lives near where the accident happpened. Investigators said 14-year-old Zykeith Harris died on the scene.
The other victim suffers minor injuries and is still in the hospital.
The driver fled the scene and is still on the loose.
"I hope he has the integrity to take responsibilty for what he's done.
It was bad enough the accident happened its worse that he left the scene," said Johnson.
Johnson said he knows how dangerous Gordon Highway is especially at night.
"It's very congested in this area. There is a lot of high speed traffic going down Gordon Highway especially after that last light," he said.
Many neighbors in this area don't want their kids out because the cars just fly by, but for some walking is the only way to get around
"I know younger people dont have the option of driving, so it could be dangerous for younger people," said Johnson.
Johnson said it's a tragedy, and he hopes people slow down and pay attention.
"There's not really a safe way to get across Gordon Highway without competing with the traffic going down the street."
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office and Traffic Division are asking anyone with information about the unknown car to call the Sheriff's Office at 706-821-1080.
