AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- One man is in jail, and one is still on the run after deputies say the pair robbed two different grocery stores in Augusta this week.
Jesse Chancey heard the Bi-Lo on Peach Orchard Road was robbed Tuesday, so he changed up his shopping schedule.
"I went to shop at Kroger because I didn't want to shop at the store that just got robbed," Chancey said.
That's when he started talking to a store clerk at Kroger about the robbery down the road.
"They was shocked to find out that Bi-Lo had been robbed. They found out from me that Bi-Lo had been robbed," he said.
The clerk was shocked because she had been working at Kroger the night before when deputies say a man slipped her a note, saying he had a gun and to give her all the money.
"I heard the story from y'all [News 12], and then I found out and just thought about it, if they had been shown a note, and Bi-Lo had been shown a note as well, maybe it was the same people who robbed both," he said.
Deputies say that's exactly what happened. Around 9 p.m. Monday, they say two men robbed the Kroger on Deans Bridge Road. Then, about 12 hours later, the same pair targeted the Bi-Lo on Peach Orchard Road.
"They were robbing grocery stores, which means just about anybody could be hit and affected by it," Chancey said.
It's a crime that hit close to home for Chancey because he used to work at both stores.
"I can only imagine what they was feeling when something like that happened, and I can only imagine what was going through their head," he said.
He says when you're a cashier at a grocery store, getting robbed never really crosses your mind.
"There's no training. We basically are just told to meet the demands," which is what deputies say both clerks did.
And Chancey says if he is ever put in that situation, "I'd just give them all the money."
Deputies have arrested Craig Roberts on two counts of robbery by intimidation charges. He is in the Richmond County Jail, but they are still looking for another man. He is pictured in the video wearing a lime green hat and dreadlocks. They say he distracted the manager while Roberts robbed the desk clerks. If you have any information about
who he is, or where he is, you are asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
