AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- What started out as a sunny Saturday afternoon ended with one woman dead and her 2-year-old son left without a mother.

Lukisha Nicole Thomas, 29, died while in surgery from multiple body trauma Saturday afternoon.

Ray Charles Wooden Jr. was injured in the accident and is said to be in critical condition.

Karl Odenthal of Aiken Public Safety says he doesn't see this too often.

"This type is relatively rare, it's maybe one or two times a year," Odenthal said.

An accident reconstruction team was also called to the scene.

"What they'll do is take the physical evidence on the scene, for example, articles of clothing, where the pedestrians' bodies were positioned and take measurements from where the cars point of impact occurred," Odenthal said.

That reconstruction team uses tools like a weighted tire to determine exactly how fast the driver was going and even where those pedestrians were hit.

Authorities say the investigation has revealed that Thomas, her son and Wooden were walking on the sidewalk near the corner of York and Eastern Place when the driver jumped the curb and hit both Thomas and Wooden.

Public Safety spoke to the driver when they arrived at the scene.

"He's obviously shaken up, he's very upset with himself," Odenthal said.

But officials say it might take as long as two years to get this case to trial.

For now, they're doing what they can to put all of the pieces of this puzzle together.
