AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A GRU student is in the hospital after officers say he attempted to run over a GRU Public Safety Officer.
News 12 has confirmed Specialist Dante Stewart, 19, was the driver arrested early Saturday morning.
Chief William McBride says it all stemmed from a loud noise complaint at University Village off of Damascus Rd.
When officers arrived, they say the group scattered. One man got in his car, attempting to flee, almost hitting an officer.
McBride says at that point, the officer fired shots at the suspect, striking him in the lip. It ended when the drivers car hit a tree right outside the complex.
Officers believe the driver is a member of the military. He was transported to GRU's trauma center with no serious injuries.
GRU is handing the investigation over to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office since an officer was involved.
Specialist Stewart serves with the Georgia Army National Guard. He is part of the 878 Engineer Battalion out of Augusta, Georgia. RCSO says Stewart will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
The name of the officer involved still has not been released. Stay with News 12 as we discover the latest.
"Protocol with all weapons discharges is to conduct an investigation," a GRU press release stated. "The university is cooperating with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the GRU officer has been placed on paid administrative leave."
