HARLEM, Ga. -- Investigators have released the names of the off-duty Richmond County deputy who was attacked Monday and of the man who is accused of stabbing him.

Officials tell News 12 the victim is road patrol Deputy Kevin Harrell, who is now recovering from stab wounds in the hospital. As of Tuesday afternoon, Harrell was said to be in fair condition.

The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Charles Robert Smith. Smith is a specialist in the Army.

Harlem Public Safety officers responded to Village Run around 8:30 p.m. Monday in reference to a fight between two men.

Officials say Harrell was walking his dog when the dog started barking at Smith. Smith then allegedly started an argument. Harrell apologized, but Smith kept arguing. Investigators say this is when Smith pulled a knife and attacked Harrell.

Harrell was cut on his chest and back and has a dislocated shoulder.
