AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- News 12 is the only station in town to show you deplorable conditions inside an Augusta hotel.

We found images showing the inside of a room at the Parkway Inn in Augusta on popular travel website Tripadvisor.com.

"What will be shown online will be their (a hotel's) model unit. Not all their units look like their model unit," said Rob Sherman with county
code enforcement.

A far cry from what News 12 found on Tuesday. We found stained mattresses and peeling and mold-infested walls during a raid by county health officials.

"If a person is traveling and looking for a hotel room online you just have to look closely at what they are offering," said Sherman, who was with several agencies investigating the Parkway Inn.

He says these compliance raids occur throughout the county every year and that guests do not have to stay in a hotel they feel is unsafe.

"Once you arrive and you check in and you find that it does not meet your expectations, you go back to the front desk and tell them this is not what I was expecting," Sherman said.

And if you want to avoid the unexpected, many travel websites have sections with customer reviews.

News 12 found seven comments about the Parkway Inn, including one couple who claim roaches and bedbugs ruined their honeymoon.

Sherman says he was not surprised. He says the owner of the Parkway Inn will be notified of the issues that were found after the joint task force meets.

You can also check with the local convention visitors bureau where some hotels are registered, but he says to keep in mind that you will get what you pay for.
