Only on 12: Military plaque is reunited with family after 8 years

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- It's a field of broken things -- a place where memories get lost forever.

But underneath it all, Aristo Burnette found something worth remembering.

"Started cleaning out the trash in them and the plaque was in the trunk of the car," he said.

A brand new plaque bearing the name Frank Lee Braxton Sr., a piece of the past that was almost lost.

"The best thing that I found in my heart was to try to see if I could find the family that it came from," said Burnette.

Burnette called News 12 for help. We searched everywhere, and finally found her at home In Hephzibah.

"For 38 years, he was my life," said Kate Braxton, whose husband passed in 2005.

And for the last eight years she's been wondering how something like this could just disappear.

"I gave my daughter the car. In the process of all of that, the car broke down," she told News 12's Patrick Price.

Days turned to months and months to years. The plaque became a dusty memory in Braxton's head.

"I knew it was in the back of the car, but once they towed it, that was it, I said, 'It's gone,'" she explained.

It was a remembrance of her husband's life in the military -- a life she knew all too well.

"The plaque that the military gave him, that one I kept instead of putting it on the grave because that one could be near me," she said.

And now it is. It's a reminder of the love of her life back where he belongs.

"I can walk by and say, OK bro, I gotcha," she said as she smiled.
