AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Shots rang out around 1 a.m. Friday at Dogwood Terrace apartments, and one of those bullets wound up in an 8-year-old's bedroom. Now, her mother is speaking out about the violence in the area and what needs to be done.

Shayla Doyle, 8, was just sitting in her bedroom folding her clothes when she heard a loud noise.

"We heard it again, and then I just seen a bullet and it went up there," she said, as she showed News 12's Laura Warren a bullet hole in her wall.

Someone fired a shot Thursday night around 1 a.m. outside of her apartment at Dogwood Terrace, which went straight through her bedroom window.

Her mom, Shameka Doyle, says, "I couldn't sleep last night. I was basically up the whole night thinking about what if the bullet did hit her."

When the bullet came through the window, the glass shattered, hitting Shayla in the eye.

And, unfortunately, this isn't the first problem they've had at Dogwood Terrace. About three months ago, someone broke into their house.

"My little girl woke up to a burglar, but she was so scared that she didn't move, which I'm glad that she didn't," Doyle said.

With so much violence, Doyle is afraid for her kids.

"I don't even let my children go outside because of situations like this," she said.

Doyle filed an incident report after the shooting, and she's hoping others will step up and report crimes in the area, too.

"I think everyone should, once they see something, call and report it," she said.

Lt. Calvin Chew with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office says, "Sometimes we don't get called, but in this case, we were called, we responded and our investigators are working on it as we speak."

The Sheriff's Office says the more tips they get, the more help they can give to the areas that need it most.
