No deal on skywalk, plan to expire old taxi cabs

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A new pedestrian bridge linking the Augusta Convention Center to the new parking deck will not be coming anytime soon.

Augusta commissioners voted 4 to 4 on Tuesday, deciding not to provide funding. A yes vote would have approved almost $900,000 to pay for the new bridge.

Paul Simon, the manager for the parking deck, was set to address commissioners Tuesday evening, but changed his mind at the last minute.

Commissioner Bill Lockett says there are better things to do with the money.

"We need to see what the foot traffic is going to be between the parking deck on to the convention center. I think maybe a year from now, we will have a better idea as for the need," he said.

There was a different outcome for small cab companies. They were happy that commissioners did not approve a plan that would take taxi cabs 10 years and older off the road.

Some commissioners say the ordinance would put smaller cab companies out of a job.

"People don't have a job as it is. This would've taken a a lot of jobs from independents cab owners. What are they going to do for work?" said Courtesy Cab Owner Grace Cooker.

Commissioner Joe Jackson said keeping updated equipment is just part of being a small business owner.

The vote failed, and the older cabs are allowed on the road as long as they're under 15 years old.
