AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The stage has been set for the mayor pro tem vote.

A few weeks ago, Commissioner Corey Johnson announced on our weekly radio show that he was interested in the position.

"It's a lot of work that comes with it, but I'm up for the challenge, and I think I'll make a great mayor pro tem."

He said, "One of my colleagues came to me and he actually made the notion that he was going to nominate me ... Joe Jackson did, and I told him, I said, 'Joe, I really appreciate that, and I definitely will serve if we can get the votes to do that.'"

The mayor also threw Commissioner Johnson his vote of confidence on our show, saying, "I think it will be Corey Johnson. He's reached out to other commissioners. I think Corey would do a great job, I think Alvin Mason did a great job in the past, but I think it will be Corey."

But not every commissioner was on board with that endorsement.

"I didn't particularly care for that because we have 10 commissioners, and any one of those commissioners could be mayor pro tem," Commissioner Bill Lockett said.

Lockett expressed interest in the mayor pro tem job as well, saying, "If I can move up to the next level, and I'm qualified for it, quite naturally I would like to do it."

Lockett was less than pleased with the mayor's public prediction, saying, "What you're doing is sort of smacking down any of the other 9 commissioners."
