AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Folks on Old Pope Road in Aiken are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The road they live on is completely washed out and almost impossible to drive. It's so bad that they've even had a hard time getting EMS down their street.
"This road is exactly like a roller coaster," said Aretha Copeland. "Going up and down this road, it's tragic."
She has lived on Old Pope Road for fourteen years now, but she's never seen it this bad. The road has always had it's problems, but Thursday was the final straw.
"Yesterday there was an incident, an emergency vehicle had to come down here, and to tell you the truth when they came down one of the guys wasn't happy because he didn't think he could get back up the road," Copeland said.
She says if the road continues to get worse, help won't be able to get here at all.
"Unless they would have to park their vehicle and walk down the road with a gurney and walk back up, there's no way," she said.
It's not only driving down the road she's concerned about. She also worries about her kids climbing up this road to get to school.
With two kids driving on the road, she worries about their safety.
"It would be terrible. It would actually probably be fatal," Copeland said.
The road is privately owned, so the city can't help. Leaving Aretha and her neighbors on their own.
"No one I guess really has the funds and it will take a lot to fix this road to maintenance the road," she said.
Again, the road is on private property and the owner tells News 12 she would be happy to work out some sort of payment plan with the folks who live on the road to get it fixed. But right now, she doesn't have the money to make repairs.
