Neighbors are worried more rain could cause serious damage

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Trees, limbs and branches are the main things neighbors say are being sucked down a drain when it rains.

"Oh yeah. I don't want no more rain," said Theresa Rhodes as she laughed.

Rhodes tried to find humor as she began to deal with the cleanup of two oak trees that fell Sunday. She says fixing this will cost her more than money.

"It cost work because we have to stay home from work to take care of it," she said.

Rhodes and many of her neighbors think all of this might have been prevented.

"Come and get the drainage clean so we won't have all the water piled up in the yard," she said.

Michael Holler lives across the street and says only God can control the rain, but when drains don't work, things can get messy.

"The problem is when you continuously push water on someone else's property and the ground gets saturated, you will have this type of problem," he said.

Holler says the water can be so strong sometimes it almost feels like you are some where else.

"Like you was standing on the side of a river. Like the Savannah River in a small version," Holler said.

He tells us he's called the city at least 10 times to try and get someone to clean the drain.

"They'll come out and look at it and say, 'Well, we are going to get somebody out here to clean it up,' but they don't come back," he said.

Rhodes says she isn't happy about this and that only humor can ease her anger.

"Feels like you got a little lake in your backyard," she said.

News 12 reached out to the city Friday morning and is waiting to hear back from the Engineering Department. For now, families in this neighborhood are worried more rain could cause even more serious damage.
