SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- The 17-year-old victim in a drowning at Lake Murray on Sunday has been identified.
Officials say Millard Waeland Peeples was one of two teens who jumped off a pontoon boat as it was coming into a public dock at Riverbend Point in Saluda, S.C.
Both boys started struggling in the water. Officials say a bystander then threw them a life jacket, which one of the boys held on to. They say when the boy turned around to look for Peeples, he had gone underwater. There is no word on what caused the boys to start struggling in the water. The coroner says the area they jumped into was 12 feet deep and 80 degrees.
Divers and rescue personnel from Newberry and Union County Rescue Squads recovered Peeples' body shortly before 6 p.m.
Both of Peeples' parents were serving in Afghanistan at the time of the drowning and are on their way back home.
