AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The name has been released of the probation officer who was injured in a shooting at the Georgia Department of Corrections Probation Office in Augusta on Monday.
Sherrill Latasha Warren is said to be in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
Warren has been with the Department of Corrections for seven years.
Commissioner Brian Owens released the following statement: "Our law enforcement partners have been a source of great support, both during and after the incident, and our appreciation for their actions goes beyond words."
According to officials, 29-year-old Travis Berrian went into the probation office, and once he was inside, officers discovered that he had an active warrant out for his arrest. That's when they tried to take him into custody, which is when a struggle ensued.
Warren was shot and wounded during the struggle. Berrian was shot and later died from his injuries.
Berrian was arrested in 2003 for criminal damage to property in Richmond County. He was released in 2009. He was also implicated in a double murder back in 2010 but was never charged.
