EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office says a man was found walking along Martintown Road after allegedly leaving a child in a ditch.
A deputy says he saw 31-year-old Carl Thompson Grove walking around naked on Wednesday night.
The deputy says he told Grove to stop, but Grove continued walking down the road. That's when the deputy heard a child crying and found a naked 2-year-old in a ditch near the road.
The child did not have any visible injuries and was released to her mother.
A woman who lives along Martintown Road said she saw Grove walking from the creek toward her home. He told her his jeep was sunk and that he needed water. At that time, she says Grove was carrying the child on his shoulders and walked to the rear of the house, where he began to hose the child down and take off her clothing.
That's when the homeowner says Grove picked up an extension ladder and threw it over the porch railing and began to hit the glass door with a log caddy to try to get inside the home.
When he wasn't able to get inside, the homeowner says he walked away from the home while rocking and rolling around in the driveway with the child in his arms.
Deputies later found the child's clothes and diaper on the porch of the home.
No charges have been filed against Grove at this time.
