STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities in Statesboro are seeking a charge of felony murder against a man arrested in connection with the beating death of a Georgia Southern University student.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Gatto of Cumming was found unresponsive outside a local bar on Aug. 28. Police say he later died at a Savannah hospital of head injuries sustained in an altercation with 20-year-old Grant James Spencer, who's been described as a bouncer at the bar.

The Statesboro Herald reports police announced the murder charge on Tuesday. Spencer was being held at the Bulloch County Jail without bond.

It was not immediately known whether Spencer has hired an attorney. Last week, Georgia Southern President Brooks Keel said in a statement the entire university family was "deeply saddened" by Gatto's death.
