Accident in Aiken, Hampton Ave. at Laurens St.

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Multiple people are recovering after an accident at the intersection of Hampton Avenue and Laurens Street in Downtown Aiken.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety says four were transported to the hospital by Aiken County EMS and Aiken Rescue after the accident.

Public Safety says a man in a white pickup truck was driving south on Laurens Street when he ran the red light at Hampton Avenue, lost control of his vehicle, and ran into two other vehicles that were waiting at the red light on the other side of Hampton. Public Safety says one of those vehicles then bumped into another car.

Two cars rolled over in the four-car crash. Officers say four people were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

"Everybody went off in the ambulance, but everybody was talking and moving, so, you know, I think everybody's going to be okay," says Robyn Bacon, an eyewitness. "I hope so."

Bacon and her sons witnessed the wreck. She says they jumped into action. One of her sons used a piece of metal he found on the road to break the window of one overturned car and free the entrapped driver, she says.

Public Safety says the driver of the pickup truck was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center, where they will treat his injuries and possibly test his toxicology. Otherwise, he faces minor traffic charges.
