AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Motocross stunt driver Kenny Steinke's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after an accident during a show in Augusta, according to officials at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

It was a terrifying accident that left onlookers in shock.

Steinke crashed Saturday night at the Monster X show at the James Brown Arena in front of hundreds of people, including a friend who's been riding with him for years.

"Kenny's in stable condition," said Travis Willis. "He's doing better day by day. He's breathing on his own. He's moving both arms, both legs. He has opened his eyes. So, each day gets better and better."

Willis is part of Team FMX with Steinke based in Orlando.

"We've been all around the world together. And this is what he does, day in day out," Willis said. "He's a strong guy."

Steinke's been riding professionally for about 12 years, and Willis says he's no stranger to a hard fall.

"He's got two plates, 18 screws in his right arm. I've seen him take big chunks out of his hand," Willis said. "Hospitals aren't the place we like to be, but we do know that that's our occupational hazard unfortunately."

And one simple mistake can make all the difference.

"He was performing a trick where he takes one leg over the handlebars and leans back," Willis said. "In the process of getting back on the bike, his foot got caught up in the handlebars. And we're only in the air for just a few seconds, and it just wasn't long enough for him to get unhooked."

Leaving him to recover in his new home away from home.

"We want to thank everybody for their support. Augusta's just been tremendous. We've had an [outcry] of support that's just been phenomenal. We can't thank everybody enough."

Steinke's team and family have set up a way for folks to donate. You can make donations on Paypal at downsideupfmx@yahoo.com.
