RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta mother is behind bars and her 5-year-old son is with DFACS after investigators say she locked him out of the house while she ran errands.
A witness tells deputies, around 4:15 p.m. she saw the 5-year-old dropped off by the school bus and walked towards his home on Sapelo Circle. She says a short time later, the power went off in the complex and she went to inspect everything.
That's when she says she saw the boy standing outside of the home. She says he could not tell her where his mother, Jamila Maston, was or when she would be home.
She says she tried to call Maston several times and did not get an answer. She then called DFACS.
Around 6:30 p.m., witnesses say Maston came home and said she had gone to pay bills and stopped to buy a pizza on her way home. DFACS investigators say there was no food in the house.
They also say the 5-year-old had scars on his back, which he told them were from when his mother "whooped him" with a belt.
An apartment maintenance worker says the home had been without water for two weeks and without electricity for five weeks.
Maston is charged with deprivation of a minor.
