COLUMBIA CTY., Ga. – Columbia County authorities are looking for a man they say took out a $10,000 loan and now has disappeared.
The incident report claims 30 year old Varquis Elbert Lewis of Millen was approved for a $10,000 loan in November of 2011. Lewis claimed to be a member of the Union Baptist Church on Greene Street in Augusta. The loan was to be for furniture and equipment for the church.
A Security Federal Bank representative told investigators that after several months, the loan became delinquent. He attempted to contact the subject several to recover the monies but was given different excuses each time for Lewis’ inability to pay. A collection letter was sent to Union Baptist Church.
A church deacon contacted the bank and told them they had no such employee named Varquis Lewis and the church did not apply for the loan.
Since then, the bank has been unable to contact Lewis.
If you have any information on the location of Varquis Elbert Lewis, please contact the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
