Melvin Farmer wins council seat in Wrens special election

WRENS, Ga. (WRDW) -- The results are in for a special election in Wrens.

Voters have elected Melvin Farmer to serve on the Wrens City Council. Turnout was low, but Farmer won by a large margin with 144 votes. Jimmy Bennett got 76 votes, and David Hastings received 10.

Farmer will fill the seat left vacant by Herman Wright.

The 42-year-old resigned after being arrested in January following a two-month investigation by the Wrens Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Wright is charged with three counts of sale and distribution of prescription drugs, one count of theft by receiving stolen property and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
