WASHINGTON, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Mayor is proposing to disband the Washington city police department and contract with the Wilkes County Sheriff's office, Councilman Marion Tutt said.

The city spend $1.1 million a year on the police department and contracting with the Sheriff's Office would save roughly half of that, he said.

Tutt said he and some other council members oppose the plan.

The Council’s next meeting is June 2 at 6 p.m. and Tutt anticipates a packed meeting.
