Many say Crosland Park crime strategies are working

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- The autopsy is complete, and News 12 now knows the name of the victim in the early morning shooting in Crosland Park. The coroner says 19-year-old Shane Jones died from multiple gunshot wounds inside the home on Aldrich Street.

"It's very sad. It's terrible. I don't really know the young man, but it's sad when you lose a life at any age," says Jack Knox, who lives down the street from where the shooting happened.

Knox heads up a neighborhood crime watch. He says even though Wednesday morning's murder is tragic, things are looking better for the north Aiken neighborhood.

"We take care of each others lawns," he said. "We watch over each others properties whenever we're away from time to time. We have a really good relationship with each other out here in this area."

Capt. David Turno with the Aiken Department of Public Safety says Chief Charles Barranco's tactics are paying off.

"Everybody wants to live in a nice, peaceful neighborhood and that's what we're trying to bring," he said.

Besides more patrols, there's a community element, too. He says it's all about relationships.

"And those relationships help us solve crimes like this, because people will talk to us when they know who we are and we've built those relationships," he said.

There are frequent community get-togethers, too, especially during summer when school's out.

"We get together, and we organize a walk, and they do the movie nights here, which we all share and try to show the kids positive things and do activities with them," Knox said.

Knox says he wishes more folks would take advantage, but in the meantime, he'll continue to look out for his neighborhood.

"If you know anything, just go ahead and get in touch with the police and do the right thing. Let's just try to be neighborly and love one another," he said.

Turno says the community's help was crucial. He says tips from many members of Crosland Park led to the arrests of four suspects.
