NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- It was a bold move in broad daylight that left one customer with a wound to his head and another to his side when all he wanted was a quart of oil.
A man is still on the run after stabbing and then carjacking a customer at an auto parts store. It happened outside the Autozone on Atomic Road in North Augusta Tuesday morning.
What was supposed to be a quick errand for oil turned into a trip to the hospital after deputies say someone approached a customer on his way in the store.
"A black male wearing dark clothing he asked him for a cigarette. When he extended his hand to give him a cigarette, the young man struck him over the head and attempted to stab him with some type of object," explained Sgt. Maurice Ransom, North Augusta Department of Public Safety.
While the customer left with wounds to his head and side, the attacker took off in the victim's car, heading south on Highway 125. He's still on the loose. The car is described as a black Suzuki Forenza with South Carolina tag FAA951. If you see the car, contact authorities.
It was a stabbing and carjacking that happened in broad daylight with people just yards away, but no one heard or saw a thing.
"It's why I carry a gun," Robbie Smith said.
Smith works as a mechanic next door. Even though the incident happened only yards away from his garage, he says he didn't even know anything happened until the cop cars pulled up.
"I've been here since 7:30 this morning and didn't hear or see anything, so they were quiet about it. They didn't speed off or squall tires because if they'd done that, we'd have turned and looked," Smith said.
"Feeling kind of scared because the people that are doing this catch you off by yourself," Johnny Washington said.
Washington is a regular customer at Autozone. He says he always comes in the daylight when there are crowds for this very reason.
"That's how they approach, with a question or problem, and next thing you know they take your life or whatever possessions you may have," he said.
Detectives are working to get surveillance video and the surrounding stores to try to identify the attacker.
