Deadly Shooting

JOHNSTON, SC (WRDW) -- The Johnston Police Department is investigating a shooting that ended with a man dead at the hospital.

The man was later identified by Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett as Otis M. Key Jr. Police say he was around 25 years old.

Officers were called around 11:20 a.m. Friday for gunfire at a home on Lanier Road.

Jamila Dobbs, who lives nearby, responded after she heard her neighbors screaming for help.

"When we got up there, I saw the man coming out the back door with blood coming all the way down his left side, so I told my neighbor I'm just going to call 911, because apparently, something else is going on," Dobbs said.

When police arrived, Chief D.C. Aston says officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

A female at the home, who was identified as the suspect, was taken into custody and jailed at the Edgefield County Detention Center.

Chief Aston says it started as a verbal argument that turned into a deadly shooting.

The female subject has not been charged with murder as of yet. Chief Aston says he and the Solicitor's Office will work to determine whether or not murder is the proper charge.

Key's autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in Newberry.
