AIKEN CO., S.C. (WRDW) -- A man accused in a double fatal wreck from 2014 has pleaded guilty this week to two counts of homicide by vehicle.
Aulstin Beard pleaded guilty this week and was sentenced to jail time not to exceed 6 years.
At the time of the crash, Beard was 21-years-old. Beard will serve a minimum of 10 months but likely 10 to 13 months. His sentence depends on how well he does when he is behind bars, the Aiken County Solicitor’s Office said.
Beard's license has also been suspended.
BURNETTOWN, S.C. (WRDW) -- A 21-year-old driver is now facing serious charges following a double fatal wreck from January.
Aulstin Beard is facing two counts of reckless homicide after South Carolina Highway Patrol says he wrecked a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Dixie Clay Road in January of this year. 20-year-old Tyler Gardner and 18-year-old Helen Reid were in the car with Beard and died in the wreck.
“She was my closest friend,” said Lillian Brisson of Reid. ”We called each other sisters.”
After a months long investigation by Highway Patrol it was determined that Beard was driving 94 MPH in a 45 MPH zone when he lost control and slammed into a tree.
“It's so easy to speed,” said Brisson. “There's no way I can live my life holding that against him.”
Beard was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center over the weekend but quickly bonded out. With two reckless homicide charges Beard could be facing up to 20 years in prison.
“I don't put any blame on him,” added Brisson. “It could happen to anybody at any moment.”
