AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Two weekend attacks have some Augustans saying they plan to stay out of downtown away after dark.

Wesley Spires, a 27-year-old volunteer firefighter from Edgefield was assaulted and robbed Friday night.

The police report says the incident started at a bench, but it didn't end there. After being beaten by a bat or pipe, Spires and his girlfriend made it to his truck that was parked nearby and drove to University Hospital.

Bobby Allen went to high school with Spires and says he doesn't understand why he was robbed and beaten.

"Wesley does what he says, when he says. He's self-employed. He's a hard worker. Does anything he can to help anybody," Allen said.

He's even a volunteer firefighter and that's why Allen says he doesn't think much of the suspects.

"I think they are lower than dirt, personally -- to attack someone like that," Allen said.

Spires suffered a skull fracture and bleeding to the brain. He still hasn't been able to leave the hospital.

"They put him under sedation so he wouldn't injure himself anymore. They want to make sure he didn't have any brain swelling, so they sedated him to make sure he'll heal faster. They are going to take him out of sedation in a few days," Allen said.

For now, the small group of 15 volunteer firefighters are praying for their buddy and hoping he makes it back soon.

Spires is known as man 716 in his volunteer unit. He came back to the department a few months ago after taking a break. He served for three years before the break.
