Longtime lawmaker won't seek reelection

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- After much rumor and speculation, Representative Roland Smith tells News 12 he won't seek reelection in November 2014.

The upcoming session will mark Rep. Smith's 26th year serving in the South Carolina House of Representative. For 18 of those years, he has served as Aiken County's legislative delegation chairman.

On January 13th at 5:00 PM, Smith plans to make the formal announcement to the delegation in its scheduled meeting.

Smith is former chairman of the House Ethics Committee. Smith tells News 12 he believes he accomplished his goal of economic development. He says he was instrumental in legislation promoting economic growth.

Smith lives in Warrenville with his wife, Peggy.
