NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Most of you have probably noticed today is Dec. 12, 2012, or 12/12/12. A few people out there are making the day mean something by tying the knot.
Kathy Chavous and her new husband, Richard Phillips, always knew this date was special.
"A long time ago, we met on Dec. 12, and we got to thinking about it and we thought it would be kinda neat to get married on 12/12/12," Phillips said.
"It was beautiful, beautiful," Chavous said.
Now they're surprising their friends and families by saying "I do."
"We're surprising the family, and apparently a lot of other people, because nobody knows except for you all," Chavous said.
"I guess we'll tell people to watch the 6 o'clock news," Phillips said.
"We just got married ... surprise!" the new husband and wife said in unison.
And they're not alone -- many couples are taking advantage of the unique day.
"It's a very special day, a lot of people come here because they met on this day or because it's a great day to remember their anniversary," explained Rudy Brostrom with Gazebo Weddings in North Augusta. "Generally we have just couples, rather than a whole group of people. They kind of want to keep it private, make it more romantic between the two people."
That's the way Marilyn Morales and Jose Ortiz wanted their wedding day.
"It makes me feel pretty special," Morales said.
"I'm happy. I'm happy that we're united here today, on this special day," said her husband, Ortiz.
And they took it a step farther, deciding to get married at noon on 12/12/12.
"I glanced in the calendar and I said, look. It says 12/12/12. That would be real nice," Morales said.
It's a day they will never forget.
"It's going to be a special day, Dec. 12, definitely and always to remember," Ortiz said.
"You may now kiss your lovely wife," Brostrom told them.
It's estimated more than 7,500 couples will get married around the country, and keep in mind, this is the last triple date until Jan.1 of the year 2101.
And it's not only weddings making headlines Wednesday, it's a special day for birthdays, too.
At University Hospital, little Aoife Emma-Jean Pierce was born Tuesday morning on 12/12/12.
She's 8 pounds, 11 ounces, and her parents decided to schedule a labor induction for their third child, so she would have a neat story to tell.
"When I looked at the calendar and it was going to be 12/12/12, I just thought, that's perfect. We have to try for that. That would be the best birthday," said Laura Pierce, Aoife's mother.
Aoife was just a couple hours old when we stopped by the hospital. In case you're wondering, the name is Irish. Both mom and baby are doing just fine.
