AUGUSTA, Ga. -- PetSmart Charities donated nearly $100,000 worth of supplies to help the homeless pets, and a lot of those dollars came from pet lovers like you.
If you've been to PetSmart, you've probably been asked at checkout if you'd like to donate to help homeless pets. It's a national charity, but a lot of those dollars are being put to good use right here in our own area.
"The leashes, food, collars, crates, puppy pads, water bowls, enrichment toys, everything's been donated by PetSmart Charities, and we really couldn't have done this without them," said Kim Kelly, the South Carolina director of the Humane Society of the U.S.
Nearly 300 pets are living in a temporary warehouse while courts process an animal cruelty case regarding a possible puppy mill, but it takes a lot of supplies to take care of that many animals.
"The first thing that came to my mind is, 'What can we do to help?'" said Kim Cavros, PetSmart manager.
PetSmart Charities donated $90,000 worth of supplies, even sending volunteers to help set up the temporary shelter for the homeless pets.
Terrence Hutcherson, a PetSmart shopper, says, "I think that it's pretty cool that they're doing something for the community rather than just for the business itself."
Hutcherson just got a new dog, and he's been shopping at PetSmart for supplies, but he never knew where the "donations to help homeless pets" really went.
"It helps out pets that are in need in different situations, for instance the tornado victims a few years back," Carvos said.
"I think everybody in line is more willing to donate now that they know that their dollar is actually going to something significant," Hutcherson said.
And these rescued pets aren't the only ones in our area benefiting from your donations.
Gary Willoughby, director of the Aiken SPCA, says, "PetSmart Charities is working with us on some grants to pay for all of the equipment."
They'll be donating thousands of dollars to the Aiken SPCA to help spay and neuter thousands of animals.
