AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Fire officials confirmed crews found the body of a man inside the burned home on Jenkins Street in Augusta Friday night.
The victim has been identified as 58-year-old Bruce Williams who was pronounced dead at the scene, the Richmond County coroner said.
The victim's sister said Williams had a stroke last year and had congestive heart failure. She said he was very frail and could barely walk with a cane.
Crews battled the flames at a house fire on Jenkins Street at Tuttle Street for hours. Dispatch said the call came in shortly before 8:30 Friday night. Firefighters were still actively working to put the fire out at 11 p.m.
Witnesses said they could hear cries of help coming from inside the home.
The Richmond County Fire Chief said four people were inside the home. For hours, only three were accounted for. At first, fire officials weren't sure if the man was inside the house or at the hospital. Fire officials have since confirmed the man's body was found in the home.
Fire officials said it looked like the fire may have been caused from smoking on the front porch when a couch caught fire.
