AIKEN, S.C. -- Circuit Court Judge Thomas A. Russo of Florence has declared a mistrial in the case of the State of South Carolina v. Harold Cartwright.
The jury was hung 11-1 on favor of finding Cartwright guilty.
The members of the jury communicated to the judge that they were in a deadlock on all 28 charges, which included indictments for criminal sexual conduct and lewd acts to a minor under the age of 16 years.
The one dissenting juror told News 12 that he felt it was a he said, she said situation. He said he would have liked to hear from more witnesses. He said a bed sheet and pair of one of the victim's underwear containing Cartwright's semen wasn't enough hard evidence.
The state can try Cartwright again at a further date.
